The two statues below in the Honoring Garden of the Native American Student Center are designed by Lillian Pitt and fabricated by Ken MacKintosh. When the students graduate, they place a rock in the garden incised with their name, the name of their tribe, their degree, and year of graduation. About 31 different tribes are represented.

All of my work stands as a testament and tribute to the powerful force of nature and our role and relationship with the natural world. It is imperative that we listen to the voices of our ancestors and learn to live in harmony with all forms of life in the universe.

With this piece, I began to experiment with mixing different metals. I also significantly increased the scale.

The Salmon's Journey

On the north side of Portland State near Jackson street stands an imposing monument, completed late in 2004. This 50' tall marker is constructed of three trees felled by the eruption of Mt. St. Helens in 1980-81. They have been soaking in a nearby reservoir since the eruption. The wood, bronze, steel, and stainless steel sculpture is the result of collaboration by Lillian Pitt and Ken MacKintosh. It represents the life cycle of salmon which is so much like the journey of students from conception to birth through their path of learning.

At the bottom of the marker, we see salmon eggs made by Lillian and Ken followed by the image of She Who Watches by Lillian, and at the very top are a mating pair of 12'salmon by Ken, topped by an abstract salmon looking up to the Universe.
